The most expensive first-planet mistake is optimizing a factory whose real job is to get you into space. Before leaving, you need stable power, automated building supplies, legible production, uninterrupted research, enough fuel, and a specific plan for acquiring titanium. You do not need perfect ratios or a permanent layout. A good Dyson Sphere Program starter base is deliberately temporary. If it keeps producing while you travel and can absorb a few more machines without collapsing, it is ready. ## Your first planet is a launchpad, not your final factory Leaving an imperfect factory behind feels irresponsible. Belts cross awkwardly, smelters sit where you would no longer place them, and production has sprawled past its original plan. That is acceptable. Your first planet has four jobs: 1. Produce the buildings needed to expand without constant manual crafting. 2. Generate enough power to run production and research at the same time. 3. Advance research until planetary travel is available. 4. Prepare you to retrieve resources, above all titanium, that constrain further progression. New players lose momentum when they add a fifth job: becoming a beautifully optimized permanent factory. You do not yet have the logistics tools, resource access, or production demands to make informed long-term design decisions. Rebuilding now usually means rebuilding again once the first off-world bottleneck changes your priorities. Treat the current factory as scaffolding. Keep it understandable, powered, and extendable, then move. ## Priority 1: Build power for the next expansion, not the current load Every additional miner, smelter, assembler, sorter, and matrix lab adds demand. A network that barely supports the machines already running has no room for the production wave you need before departure. Do not wait for a visible shutdown. Watch for earlier signs: - Power demand repeatedly approaches available generation. - Production slows when several lines operate together. - Research progress becomes inconsistent as manufacturing ramps up. - A new mining or smelting block drags down throughput elsewhere. - You start switching lines off manually to keep another chain moving. Early power does not need to be elegant. Wind turbines provide steady baseline generation, while thermal power stations turn combustible fuel into extra capacity. The test is whether you can add the next necessary production block without starving the network. Fuel-fed generation adds a dependency: the power plant must keep receiving fuel even when other lines consume the same material. A thermal setup that relies on irregular manual loading is not stable power. Give it a direct supply path you can inspect at a glance. **Do not measure power while the factory is idle.** A quiet grid can look healthy because storage is full and assemblers have stopped. Check the network while research, smelting, and building production are running together. If your save includes hostile pressure, power also has to support whatever defenses you build. That raises the required margin without changing the principle: stabilize the grid before adding optional scale. ## Priority 2: Automate the items that repeatedly interrupt construction The best automation targets are not the most advanced products. They are the materials and buildings that stop your expansion whenever they run out. Start with steady smelting for iron, copper, magnets, stone products, and steel as each enters your progression. Then automate the intermediates that feed both infrastructure and research: magnetic coils, circuit boards, gears, and other recurring inputs. The strongest early upgrade is a small production area for basic factory buildings: - Belts - Sorters - Mining machines - Smelters - Assemblers - Power infrastructure - Storage - Matrix labs These lines need continuity, not throughput. A slow assembler filling a limited box while you work elsewhere beats handcrafting another stack every time construction stalls. Low-use or situational items, including foundations, can stay manual. Automating something only because it is unlocked costs power, space, and materials without bringing departure closer. The test is simple: **Does running out of this item repeatedly interrupt mining, production, power, or research?** If yes, automate it. If not, manual crafting is good enough for now. ## Priority 3: Keep the starter base readable enough to diagnose A useful starter base does not have to be compact. It has to show where materials enter, where they are transformed, and where output is blocked. Several parallel smelting rows, a loose manufacturing strip for recurring components, and a separate research block connected by belts—with empty ground between them and a few awkward crossings—beat a dense knot where every extension means moving three unrelated lines. Build in recognizable blocks: - Miners feed a clearly identifiable raw-material belt. - Smelters process one obvious material group. - Assemblers receive intermediates from visible routes. - Output continues to another process or enters limited storage. - Empty space remains at one end of important rows for extension. Avoid routing everything through a central storage field to make the base look organized. A small buffer of belts, sorters, assemblers, and common components helps because construction demand is intermittent. Filling large boxes with every intermediate does the opposite: it diverts resources into inventory and makes weak production look healthy until the buffer empties and the shortage hits the whole factory at once. Use small containers or limit storage slots where practical, then read the line: - An empty output buffer signals inadequate production or missing inputs. - A full output with stopped machines means supply exceeds downstream demand. - A backed-up input belt points to insufficient processing. - An empty belt exposes the upstream bottleneck immediately. Visible shortages are actionable. Hidden shortages waste time. The same habits cause expensive cleanup in other automation games. Our ranking of Factorio early-game mistakes by cleanup cost explains why excessive buffering and premature reconstruction do so much damage. ## Priority 4: Let research determine the departure date Research is the clock that tells you when the starter phase is done. Keep electromagnetic matrix and energy matrix production running consistently enough to advance toward planetary travel. You do not need a huge research complex, just complete chains that work without hand delivery. When research stalls, trace the missing matrix backward: 1. Is the matrix lab receiving both required inputs? 2. Is an intermediate component missing? 3. Is smelting unable to support both research and construction? 4. Has power loss reduced production across several steps? 5. Is a large storage buffer diverting material away from the research chain? Prioritize technology that opens the route to sail mode. Mecha, power, and basic production upgrades can support that route; impressive side projects that do not help you travel or process what you are leaving to get should wait. Sail mode becomes available once the required drive-engine research is complete. Titanium is the practical reason to use it: the starting planet generally lacks an accessible titanium vein, so early progression means finding another body in the local system and hauling batches back by hand until later logistics can automate the trip. Once research permits travel and titanium is blocking progression, another rebuild is wasteful. Your factory has already answered the first-planet question. ## Prepare the trip before entering sail mode The first off-world journey needs a concrete objective, not “explore space.” Check these before launching. ### Fuel and mecha energy Space travel drains mecha energy. Load the fuel chamber and carry extra fuel in inventory rather than assuming the initial charge covers every maneuver, landing, and return leg. How much you need depends on your upgrades and destination, so err toward a generous reserve. ### Destination Identify the target planet and confirm it has the resource you need while you are still on the starting planet. Searching blindly in space burns energy. The first trip is a logistics run, not an endurance test. ### Inventory space Leave room for titanium. An inventory packed with unrelated intermediates shrinks the haul. Carry basic extraction and power infrastructure, not half the starter base. ### Remote extraction Bring what you need to establish power, mining, and collection on arrival. Early off-world transport is still manual, so the goal is a repeatable collection point, not a second complete factory. ### The return plan Know what the first haul will unlock or sustain at home. Titanium matters because it removes a concrete progression bottleneck. Random cargo does not. **Make the first trip narrow.** Establish extraction, collect the material blocking research, and return. Expand the outpost after the immediate bottleneck is removed. ## The four mistakes that waste the most time ### Rebuilding before travel changes your requirements A neater smelting area feels productive, but a full rebuild delays the information that would make the redesign worthwhile. Patch the worst belt conflicts and leave the rest until off-world resources clarify the next scale. ### Expanding beyond available power Each new line seems to solve a shortage, but an overloaded grid slows the old lines too. Add generation before a major production block, then check the network under full activity. ### Buffering enough material to hide weak throughput Large stores postpone the warning instead of fixing the chain. Keep reserves of construction items; let intermediate shortages stay visible. ### Pursuing scale before progression needs it A massive production district, extensive foundations, or early megastructure preparation consumes resources without helping you leave. Build for power, travel research, factory construction, and the first off-world objective. ## The good-enough point: when should you leave? Launch when essential building supplies are automated, power stays stable under normal operation, travel research is complete, and the next meaningful progression step requires an off-world resource. Straight belts, balanced ratios, and a permanent planetary plan can all wait. Power remains stable while production and research run together. Belts, sorters, assemblers, miners, and core infrastructure replenish automatically. Research required for sail mode and the next progression step is complete. The mecha fuel chamber is supplied, with reserve fuel carried in inventory. Inventory has room for the intended off-world resource haul. The destination and its required resource have been identified before launch. A practical titanium plan covers extraction, collection, return, and immediate use. Skip Dyson Sphere Program if layered production dependencies already feel like maintenance rather than problem-solving, or if spreading logistics across multiple planets sounds worse than perfecting one compact factory. Its payoff is interplanetary scaling, not permanent comfort on the starting world. For everyone else, the next milestone is simple: use the first haul to clear the titanium bottleneck, then improve logistics in stages. Leave the mess running. It already did its job by getting you into space.
