The Steam version's new UI and tileset genuinely help, but the game underneath is unchanged: geology, moods, procedural history, and physics interact in ways nobody fully controls, which is exactly the point. RimWorld is Dwarf Fortress with training wheels and a story director; this is the raw version, with a steeper curve and far less hand-holding, but a ceiling on emergent chaos nothing else on this list reaches.
