Factory Games Hub

Your guide to the best factory and automation games — from beginner-friendly builders to deep logistics sandboxes. Find where to start, how the sub-genres compare, and which game fits your style.

Factory games are about one thing above all else: the satisfaction of building a system that runs itself. You lay down a conveyor belt, hook up an assembler, watch parts flow — and then spend the next hundred hours chasing that same feeling at ever-larger scales.

The genre spans a wide range. At one end you have top-down logistics puzzles like Factorio, where the factory floor is your whole world. At the other you have first-person open-world builders like Satisfactory, where the environment itself is part of the experience. In between sit space-strategy hybrids like Dyson Sphere Program, factory-city hybrids like Captain of Industry, and countless games that borrow automation DNA without being pure factory games at all.

What separates factory games from city builders or colony sims is the emphasis on throughput. You're not managing happiness or morale — you're managing bottlenecks. The central question is always: what's slowing down the line?

How Factory Games Differ from City Builders

This is one of the most common points of confusion for players new to the genre. Both involve building, planning, and expansion — but the feedback loops are completely different.

In a city builder, you're balancing the needs of a population: housing, employment, services, happiness. The city is the end in itself. In a factory game, the "population" is the factory — and its needs are purely mechanical. Iron in, steel out. The factory doesn't complain; it just jams.

Factory games also tend to have harder "win" conditions. Factorio asks you to launch a rocket. Satisfactory asks you to complete project milestones. That goal-oriented structure means the factory has a purpose, even when it feels like an endless sandbox.

If you've played city builders and want to try factory games, Satisfactory is the gentlest on-ramp — the 3D world gives it a familiar exploratory feel. If you want the pure distillation of factory thinking, start with Factorio.

  • Shapez — Stripped-back factory puzzler, zero combat, pure production logic.
  • Mindustry — Free, tower-defence factory hybrid, good for learning conveyors.

Co-op & Multiplayer

Factory games are surprisingly good in co-op once you've internalized the solo experience. Factorio has excellent multiplayer — you and a friend can divide the factory into departments and meet in the middle. Satisfactory's co-op is even more natural given the shared open world.
